Additional ACT Prep for 2 month Preparation

Hello,

I took the July ACT just a couple of weeks ago and I think I did pretty well. I am expecting a 30+. On practice tests, I have scored a 34 on English, Science, and Math, but on the Reading, I got anywhere from a 26-30. I want to improve my score a little bit for the September ACT. What can I use to practice more? I have heard a couple of things, but I can't seem to find one solid suggestion. Barron's Book? Manhattan Prep 5 lb Series? Prepscholar's Online Prep? As of right now, I have completed 4 tests from the 18-19 ACT RedBook and I have read the ACT BlackBook.

Thanks for all the help,

The "Bag A Week" Club

:) The NY resolution thread has many saying they have a goal of purging a bag a week in 2014. Great idea - donate stuff or trash stuff.

Thought it would be great to keep each other on track to share what cracks, crevices, drawers and corners of the basement and attic we conquer as we go through the weeks and share what we are tossing - for motivation, for inspiration and for ideas on areas we can all reduce.

Are you in??! :)

This morning I started with a small bag - I have a small desk area in the kitchen and purged MANY old coupons, warranty info that has expired, receipts galore and other paper junk.

Let the purging begin!!!!

Surprising conversation with Son Saturday night

I just typed out a ridiculously long post, which was cathartic but no one other than me would want to read it. Here are the cliff notes.

My oldest is a rising college soph. He only looked at 2 schools, the state flagship he always wanted to attend which offered him a great scholarship, or a directional U in a neighboring state where his girlfriend went. Guess which he chose?

I thought when he had something major he wanted to talk about Saturday night he was engaged or about to be a father or both. Instead he said that basially everything I told him 18 months ago was correct and he made a horrible mistake. He wants to transfer to the in-state flagship. He is pretty sure the girlfriend of 3 years will break up with him over it, and even if she doesn't he probably will break it off. He feels like he is surrounded by people who aren't that smart and have no ambition at his current school. She fits in perfectly there. He does not. And he realizes that she has been discouraging his ambition for the last 3 years.

In my mind, all of this is correct. However, we have had a bit of a rocky relationship for the last couple of years, so after it became clear 18 months ago that he was not going to listen to me I have been very supportive of his school choice. Also because of that I am trying really hard to respect his choices now, whatever they are and I told him so.

I made a few calls yesterday, and he can still get into the school for this August, although not living where he wants to. I'm not sure if I should advise him to wait a semester or year to start classes, or if he should start there in August. I don't want him to make rash choices, although I think it is probably the right one. And he is actually wanting my advice right now, which is a first.

Any advice for me? I can give more info, but am trying to keep this a readable length.

Hi! I know I've posted before but I just wanted to get some more opinions on how strong of an applicant I am for UNC Chapel Hill, since it is my number one choice for college.
Race: Indian
County : Wake (in-state)
Gender: Female

GPA: 4.5/5.0 (W) 3.9/4.0 (UW)
ACT: 35, 8/12 on essay
SAT: 1540 superscored (770 & 770), 1520 as the highest single score
AP's: Psychology (5) Human Geography (4) Calculus AB (5) Calculus BC (4) English Lang (4) US History (4) Environmental Science (4)
Grades: I've gotten A's in every class except for Calculus AB and Calculus BC, which I got B's in.
Class rank: Last time I checked I was in the top 8% of my class, approximately 50/600. This was with a 4.475 GPA. I'm unsure where I stand with my 4.5, but I'm hoping I'm still within the top 10%.

Extracurriculars:
- Key Club (9th-10th)
- National Honors Society (11th-12th)
- Food Ark (9th-12th), was the VP of Outreach and now I am VP of Special Projects. I helped our chapter win a $1500 grant to start a sustainable cooking demo series at school which I am super excited to be in charge of!
- President of the Future Health Professionals (9th-12th)
- DECA (Have placed almost every year and attended Internationals, VP of Communications)
- FBLA
- Piano (I've been playing for 10+ years and have been teaching piano lessons as well, I have a few awards for various competitions)
- Dance (I've done Indian dances for as long as I can remember)
- Youth teacher at a religious program
- Part-time job at an ice cream shop

I'm getting a recommendation letter from a science teacher who I really adored and who only writes recommendations for 20 selected students, so hopefully that helps out my application as well. Thanks to anyone who reads this and I appreciate any and all input! :)

Early Stanford or Yale?

Should I apply early to Stanford or Yale? Note: at my school, if you get accepted to a school early, the school basically forces you to go there. So my early decision is very important.
If I went to Yale, I would do Econ. If I went to Stanford, I would do MS&E.
Reasons why I might like S over Y: I would like doing Stanford MSE over Yale Econ. Weather is better. I like the entrepreneurial spirit.
Reasons why I might like Y over S: Y is probably a bit easier and more relaxed.
Overall, I think I would like Stanford a little bit more than Yale. However, I probably have 1.5x the chance of getting into Yale than Stanford. Which should I apply early to?

Hey Everyone! I know it's a little bit early but I saw no one made a transfer thread for this year yet! :))))

A little bit about myself:
I am a freshman electrical engineering student in California with a 4.0 GPA involved in choir at my schools Newman center. I really wanted to go to Notre Dame last year but was unfortunately rejected so I am trying again!
I also have a 1510 on the new SAT and had a 4.1 in high school.

Anyways, here we can just communicate about the process and help each other out :)

Clemson Math/Comp Sci Department

So, I’m a rising junior and live in SC. All my life, I’ve considered applying to the best schools in the country (and always thought of myself as a strong candidate). In particular, I’ve always been interested in majoring in math. Lately however, I’ve seen some of the smartest people I know get rejected by the colleges I’ve considered to be “target schools”. So, I’ve been considering some in state options. Does anyone know how many opportunities a school like Clemson can provide in math and comp sci. I’ve always been interesting in working for companies in Silicon Valley and was wondering how well Clemson places into similar career opportunities. My parents have been bugging me about moving to Atlanta (since my dad works there) so I could get an easy ride to Georgia tech, but I don’t really want to move. Any thoughts?

Hello! I know that chance me questions are a bit annoying but I want to know if I'm at least competitive for Csom.
Indian Male DE resident (goes to private school)
ACT (32) Superscore maybe 33 (hopefully)
GPA 4.17 (cum laude member) (school has a weird GPA system)
6 total ap's (School offers only 11 and a maximum of 8 for a student)
3 sport varsity athlete (Captain in 2 of them)
founded a club and leader of the asian student association
Member of student judiciary
100+ volunteering hours at Ronald Mcdonald house
Worked the last 2 summers as a customer service representative
I would apply under the management and leadership conference (is it easier to apply under this concentration?)
Am I competitive or Nah?

coming out to roommate

hi all. I’m going to a more conservative college in the fall and I’m super nervous. My roommate is straight and I’m torn over whether to tell her I’m a lesbian or not. I’m a really bad liar so I’m scared she’ll find out eventually. I don’t want to lie to her but I’m also scared she’ll be grossed out. In the past when I’ve told straight girls I’m gay they assume I’m attracted to them (I’m not!!) and I don’t want her to react this way. What should I do?

Why is U of M so inconsistent with admissions and what do I need to get in?

Hello everyone,
I am an instate Michigan student who is planning to apply to U of M
I go to a top 100 national U.S. high school (top 5 in the state). It is an IB diploma school). Have a 33 ACT (32.75 comp) and a 3.946 GPA (4.3 weighted). I've pretty much have done every IB class I can in my school. President of MSA. Normally I would feel comfortable with my app.

But not for UM.

Thing is, I know people who have gotten in from the same high school with as low as a 1380 SAT yet other people with as high as a 1570 have been deferred (or rejected i dont remember).

So it seems to me that GPA and SAT/ACT are NOT a major factor in deciding admission. Rather it looks as if U of M has a specific cutoff and after that they are looking at something else.

My main question is what is that other thing(s) they are looking for?
If anyone has any experience then please let me know because I am really unsure of how I want to craft my application. It seems that visiting the campus for a tour (even though I already did in 8th grade and I already look UM) would be a good idea. If anyone has suggestions to getting lmk. I'm guessing they want people who are greatly interested in going to UM and will attend after being admitted. Tbh my attendance is heavily based on cost of attendance but I dont clearly find out how much it will be until I submit my fafsa.

Thank you for your time and lmk what you think!

Which is harder - Chem or Algebra 2?

I got a D in Algebra 2 and that was with daily tutoring and extra help - just barely passed it. My school says I must take Chem (no option of Physical Science) to graduate. I'm terrified because Algebra 2 was so hard. Is Chemistry easier than Algebra 2?

University of Michigan Price

I live in New York and I was thinking about applying to the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. But when I plugged my data into their NPC, my estimated cost was almost $65,000! Could this actually be right (my parents make about 100k a year)? If so, should I just take it off my list, as I am hoping to keep it at 30k or below. Thanks.

Transfer with a GPA 3.9/4.0, but no SAT/ACT or other English test scores

Hi, I attend the Univ. at Albany in my sophomore year in CS major.
As I mentioned in the title, I've got a GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0. I'm thinking of transferring to
Stony Brook. But, my old TOEFL score expired and I didn't take the American SAT but Korean SAT. How do you see the probability of being accepted by Stony Brook with my specification?

Anyone using CBD for pain? anxiety? other reasons. Would love to hear any feedback, good or bad. The market is exploding worldwide and been reading up on it for use and/or investments. Curious to know how mainstream USA perceives it.

Time for another thread for B and C students

$

College Confidential does so many things so very well. But there's a real lack of information and inspiration for kids who aren't at the very top end of the bell curve-- for kids with B and even C averages who plan to attend college. I started a thread on the topic last year-- mods, I'm hoping it's OK to link a locked thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1764140-can-we-talk-to-the-b-and-c-students-about-college-p1.html Locked or not, there's a lot of good info on that thread.

So often, a kid is advised (almost always by another kid) to run to the nearest Community College, as though it's the only possible option for a kid without a string of As on his transcript.

I went to Community College, and for me it was the right choice. But it wasn't for my son-- a barely B average kid who simply wasn't motivated to strive for A's. He absolutely would have fallen through the cracks at our local CC, with it's student body of 22,000. Instead, he just finished his freshman year at the perfect school for him: a small Catholic university near Philadelphia, 3 hours from home. My son, who spent 18 years watching others do things, played deck hockey, worked out every day, considered (briefly) playing rugby, and DJ'ed with his roommate one night per week. He grew up remarkably this year, mostly because we put in the time and effort to find the school that was right for him.

His sister is finishing her Junior year. Sophomore year was rough-- a combination of anxiety issues and my husband's medical crisis really did a job on her grades. So I find myself with yet another barely B student, looking at colleges.

And I'm here to tell you that there are lots and lots of them that will be the right fit for her. We've seen 2 at this point-- one she loved and one she hated. We'll see another bunch this summer.

She wants to major in Fashion Merchandising. Because of her anxiety issues, I don't want her at FIT or LIM-- Manhattan just doesn't seem to the right place for her to grow for the next 4 years.

But we have a list of about a dozen schools that should be good fits.

I'm here to tell you, as a high school teacher and a mom, that there ARE great options for you, even if you're not one of the Uber High Achievers that tend to populate this site. I've taught so many kids over the years who simply didn't blossom on the prescribed timeline, who hit their stride in college and went on to do great things.

The trick is finding that college. It may not be one of the ones your guidance counselor recommends-- my son's guidance counselor had never heard of some of the schools he applied to. If you're here, the odds are good that you're looking for hope and help in finding the right school. And I wanted to open up a discussion for you.

Should I Even Bother?

I recently came back from Tuskegee University and have a 99% have a full ride to study Computer Engineering. I loved it so much, but since my first year of high school I had other schools on my radar (but not as much as Tuskegee). I planned on applying to:
Georgia Tech
Brown
Rice
Florida A&M University
If I went to the above schools I'd have to pay about 10k per year (and I plan on going to law school after undergrad).Should I even bother applying to these other schools when I feel pretty confident I am going to Tuskegee? I've just known these schools for a long time. :(

She replied "Well, I hope you know her well enough to know I'm not her". And was serious.
