Hello, all! First, a bit about myself:
I'm originally from Southern California and came from a medium sized high school of about 1800 students. I graduated at the top of my class with a 4.0 GPA, and when it came to my decisions for college, it was between ASU, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. I ultimately decided on ASU largely because of Barrett, the Honors College and because they would be the most inexpensive choice.
I lived in the Barrett complex on the Tempe campus and enrolled as a Psychology major, but switched to English a few weeks into the semester. I was a member of the Barrett Chronicle (Barrett's bi-semester newsletter) and Blaze radio, and I was also able to find an awesome internship at a local marketing agency to help offset any costs during my first year.
Despite this, I did end up transferring out of ASU after my freshman year mainly because of the party scene. I thought I'd be able to get away from the scene a bit through Barrett, but to be honest: there's no escaping it.
However, ASU did have many merits, and it's making large efforts to step away from its party-school image.
So, if you have any questions at all about ASU, feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer most anything about academics, Greek life, transferring, and so on.

Help Brainstorm Colleges
Hi! I have a list of around 6-7 schools consisting of safeties and matches. However, I'm still looking for 2-4 more match/reaches.
I'm looking at finance/accounting/econ
Stats: GPA- ~3.7-3.8
SAT: 2050
Schools primarily in New England (esp. MA, since parents want me to stay around the area), but I am open to schools all over the country.
Thanks in advance

UCSD Transfer 2014 Waitlist?
So who else got stuck on the waitlist? Not sure how to feel about this.....some people say its worse than being denied but I'm hearing a lot of different things.
Major: econ
GPA: 3.44
Opt-in waitlist? Yes
Accepted to UCSB and rejected to UCLA but still pending for UCI. Currently leaning towards UCSB but I know that UCSD's econ program has a great prestige. Feel free to share your stats!

What Constitutes a Safety / Match / Reach?
Is there a simple rule to what constitutes an admissions (not financial) safety, match, and reach for a top student? (Details about my academic and extracurricular record are listed at the end of the post to provide context to my question.)
I am asking since I'm currently in the process of finding colleges to apply to this coming fall. So far, I have been using the following criteria to organize my list:
Safety: 50%+ acceptance rate
Match: 30-50% acceptance rate
Reach: Below 30% acceptance rate
However, several of my peers have told me that I am cutting myself short and that I should instead change my system to the following:
Safety: 40%+ acceptance rate
Match: 20-40% acceptance rate
Reach: Below 20% acceptance rate
This would mean that many of the colleges that I am considering (University of Michigan, University of Rochester, Boston College, etc.) would be matches for me instead of reaches.
The only problem is that I do not want to overestimate myself either since I want to have an even balance of safeties, matches, and reaches in my final list of colleges that I apply to.
Academics:
Most Demanding Courseload (12 AP courses w/ all 4's and 5's on the corresponding AP exams)
GPA (UW): 4.0
GPA (W): 4.7
Class Rank: 2/~800
SAT I: 2320 (730 CR, 800 M, 790 W)
SAT II: Math II - 800, Physics - 800, US History - 760
I will also have taken some advanced math courses (Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations) at my local community college by the end of my senior year.
National Merit Commended
National AP Scholar
AMC 12 School Winner
Various School Awards
Extracurricular Activities:
Math Club: 9-12 (President)
MATHCOUNTS Coach at Local Middle School: 10-12
Volunteer at Reuben H. Fleet Science Center: 10-12
Tutor: 10-12
Mayor's Youth Council: 12
CSF: 10-12 (President)
NHS: 11-12 (Treasurer)
I also enjoy studying advanced math and physics in my leisure, but I have not won much in the way of competitons. I have taken a number of Art of Problem Solving courses online, though.
I will be attending a semi-prestigious summer math and science program this summer.
Miscallenous:
I live in California. For any given institution that admits by department or college, I currently plan on applying for Engineering (or Physics if the former is not available). I expect to have great recommendation letters from my teachers and decent essays.

What schools would be a good fit?
Super basics about me:
-white, first-gen immigrant from Romania
-small public school with no amazing reputation, but not bad either.
-resident of California
-SAT: 2110 (750R/690M/670W)
-ACT: 32 (30M/33S/32E/33R)
-SAT II (720USH/760M2/790Physics)
EC: I have 3 hour water polo or swim practices year round, first team all league swimmer two years now, second in water polo, I was ranked 14th and 15th in individual events for swim in an extremely competitive CIF division. (there's more that I do but this is the most dedicated thing I do)
I'm thinking of applying to UCLA, Cal, CMU, and Cornell as my reaches.
My matches/low reach would probably be UCSD and UC Davis

Sophomore transfer to Berkeley
After a year at Cornell, I am looking to transfer to Berkeley as a sophomore for financial reasons and for the mere fact that it is closer to home for me. I have a 3.5 at Cornell and was involved in various ways this past year (ambassador program, residence hall council, and student council). I got a 3.95 in high school and was extremely involved in leadership, being sophomore and senior class president, as well as a representative for my hometown's city council youth committee. I am studying urban planning at Cornell and recognize that Berkeley has an outstanding urban planning program, so I'm looking to transfer into Environmental Design. What are my chances? I know Berkeley does not typically accept sophomore transfers, but I am hoping they will be understanding of my situation. I am also willing to apply under Arts and Sciences. Also what would be my chances for applying as a junior transfer?

UW Autumn 2014 Transfer Thread
Thought I would get a thread rolling on this now, since the application went live today for folks that want to transfer in Autumn 2014. I applied to both UW Seattle and UW Bothell, although there is a strong chance that I would prefer Bothell. Since I was not applying to any other schools in state or out of state, I went ahead and threw in my Seattle app this evening.
How long do Bothell and Seattle normally take to notify folks? Eons I assume?

Transferring out of CUNY Bing vs Buf
I finished 2 semesters at Baruch College and have been accepted to UB and Binghamton for fall 2014. I know this question is asked somewhat frequently, but I hear a lot of contradicting things pertaining to Binghamton's sciences and premed advisor. My major is undecided, but I do want to do a premed track. On the other hand UB has a rather respectable science curriculum and the school itself seems like a lot of fun.
Transferring from a CUNY to a SUNY I don't really mind the differences of social life between the 2 schools considering both are a major steps forward from Baruch. What would one suggest for a premed track (how useful science courses are for mcat, research, student/faculty helpfulness) out of the 2 schools?

An Atheist Applying to Baylor?
So like any good Texan girl, I was doing the perfunctory application to Baylor when I realized they require you to cite your religion. Will marking atheist decrease my chances of being accepted? I'm already on the upper end of their accepted applicants in other areas (2050 SAT, 3.65 GPA) with some pretty good titles (QuestBridge finalist, president of a few clubs).
And don't comment about the 'fitting-in' aspect; I grew up in a Christian family, I don't mind attending church if I can get a good Financial Aid package. I just want to know if they'll blacklist me for responding honestly.

UCI Transfer Waitlist 2014
This is a thread for other wait listed transfer students at UCI for 2014.
Major: Business Administration
GPA: 3.8
IGETC: yes, by end of semester
Accepted: UCR, CSU LB, Cal Poly Pomona
Waitlist: UCI
Rejected: none so far
UCI is my top choice; however, this June 15 decision date is driving me crazy when other schools need SIR and housing deposits already in May.
Would we even still be guaranteed housing as a waitlist transfer student?

Can I still get into a good college with my stats?
Hi everyone! So I live in New York and I am a junior in high school. I honestly did not try very hard my freshman or sophomore year so I only have a 91 GPA I got A's in like every class but math in freshman year which I got an 86 on algebra. And im not sure if colleges care about how well you did on regents in New York... do they care? If so I got a 94 in bio , 81 in algebra, 78 in geometry, 96 on Global, 89 on Earth science. I could have mastered math but i didnt study for it
For my sophomore year I had mostly all A's but English I had an 89 and Geometry I had an 83. I know I could have done so much better freshman and sophomore year but i was dumb and didn't try in math. Math is my weakest subject but if i study i can ace it.
For my Junior year, I have an A in college U.S. History but I have 2 B's in Algebra 2/trigonometry and Chemistry. Everything else I have A's.
For other extracurricular stuff, I am in interact club(community service), I'm secretary of Art Club, I tried out for RYLA(A leadership program and was a finalist but i didnt get in), I work at my parent's restaurant everyday for about 2-3 hours. In my sophomore year I did 1 year of french club. For my senior year I will be doing interact, art club, spanish club, yearbook club. The classes I am taking my senior year are Pre Calculus(Considered a college class), Physics, Comp/Lit(College class), Sociology(College class), Statistics(College class).
I did bad on my SAT's with only a 970 but i will study over the summer and retake in the fall and i only got a 22 on my ACTS but i will study over the summer too and retake in the fall. I know that what i have is not impressive but is there any chance i can still get into a good college like Binghamton university or albany university ?

Official USC 2014 Transfer Thread
The USC transfer thread for 2013 has been awesome for me. I got a lot of advice and it was a great place to go when I felt I needed some answers or just someone else who was going through what I was going through - trying to transfer to USC.
Good news is I am going to USC in the Fall 2013! I see that people are already writing on the 2013 transfer thread about 2014 transfers so I thought I'd start a thread for all of you. I'll try to help where I can.
Good luck and fight on!!!

Automatic Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships
The purpose of this thread is to catalog large scholarships that are automatic/guaranteed based on stats alone (GPA/ACT/SAT/Rank). The scholarships should be Full Tuition, Full Ride, or of similar magnitude. The scholarships should be based strictly on stats, not awards such as NMF/NMSF.
There is already an excellent thread cataloging automatic/guaranteed awards of any magnitude, large or small, so please add smaller awards there:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html?highlight=automatic
There is also already an excellent thread cataloging automatic/guaranteed awards for NMSF/NMF, so please add awards requiring that distinction there:

Please limit contributions to this thread to stats-based awards of Full Tuition / Full Ride magnitude.

Does a weird first name damage your chances of success?
What's In a Name? Turns Out, Your Entire Future
http://m.policymic.com/articles/91061/what-s-in-a-name-turns-out-your-entire-future
Eleanors, Peters and Simons are far more likely than Shanes, Shannons and Paiges to attend the elite university.
...Figlio found that the more poor and black a name sounded according to his scale, the worse the test scores and the less the likelihood of being entered into a gifted program were.
...He further suggests that children with oddly spelled names may internalize it, resulting in a correlation with slowed spelling and reading capabilities.
Do you have a common or unconventional first name? How have you fared with your name?

How Do People Find Their 'Dream' School So Early?
I have always been amazed by this question. Some people have told me that they wanted to go this so and so college since 9th grade and earlier (even since elementary school!) The aspect that surprises me the most is when they have not even visited the college to at least get a "feel" of the atmosphere. How on earth can people have a dream school if they never even "experienced" the school before in some way or the other? Any inputs?

THE PREP SCHOOL RANKING GAME (Part 3)!
Okay, I know earlier versions of this game "shut down" because people claimed it was pointless (since people were just voting for the schools they would be attending in the fall). Thus, I want to establish beforehand that this new version of the original game (by browneyedgirl8) is not trying to achieve any real, distinct purpose– this game was created solely to bring some harmless competition back into our threads! Aaaand it'll get us psyched for the next admissions cycle!
(note: the following instructions were copied & pasted from @needtoboard & @prepschoolplease's versions of this game.)
If you're not familiar with a plus/minus ranking game, here are the rules:
1) You may play once a day (called a 'turn')
2) Each turn, you may add a point to one school, and subtract a point from another. State your changes at the end of the post, and make the change to the actual numbers beside the colleges. Obviously, you should copy and paste the post before you instead of rewriting the entire list.
3) Once a college reaches '0', it is removed from play and given a ranking (ex. 'Peddie is the 23rd ranked boarding school on College Confidential.').
4) When all but one are eliminated, the remaining boarding school is named the winner.
So, do you want to find out where your favorite prep schools stand? YOU decide their fate. Once all the boarding schools have been ranked, I'll post a final list of the rankings.
A little additional info: The prep schools present on the list are those with a less than 40% admission rate and more than 300 students. Yes, I know these rankings aren't necessarily accurate, but I needed a cut-off point (the game wouldn't be any fun if there were too many on the list). If your favorite boarding school isn't included, sorry. I can't please everyone. The single addition and subtraction rule is subject to change, though. Eventually, a few schools will share hundreds of points, and it'll be beneficial to allow posters to subtract two points while only adding one.
I'll start:
Andover- 5
Berkshire- 5
Blair- 5
Brooks- 5
Canterbury- 5
Cate- 5
Choate Rosemary Hall- 5
Concord- 5
Deerfield- 4
Exeter- 5
Foxcroft- 5
Governor's- 5
Groton- 5
Hill- 5
Hotchkiss- 5
Lawrenceville- 5
Loomis- 5
Mercersburg- 5
Middlesex- 5
Milton- 5
Peddie- 5
SPS- 6
Suffield- 5
Taft- 5
+1 SPS, -1 Deerfield

USAMO/USAJMO
Which colleges care about qualifying for the USAMO or USAJMO and how much do they care? I know mit caltech and carnegie mellon care a lot (i've heard it has huge importance at MIT, somethign like 50% admission rate for qualifiers), but does your average college also care? Do I need to explain it ? For my internships which I applied to, I only got into the ones that I explained what these mean or they obviously cared about it (RSI alternate).
