Hi, during my senior year I am planning on taking the following courses and self-studying:
AP Physics C or AP Chem
AP Gov
AP Macro
AP English lit.
AP Bio
AP Calc AB
AP Calc BC(AB and BC are a single class at my school)
AP Spanish 5
AP German (I have been learning German since age five because I lived there for a short while).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Self Study:
AP Env Science
AP Stats
AP Micro
AP Physics 1 & 2(If I take Physics C)
AP Human Geo.
AP Comp Gov.
AP Comp Science
AP Music Theory
I have already bought one review book for stats, env science, and micro each so there is no way to get out of those. I am a very good history student so Human Geo and comp Gov should be easy(debating if I should take these though). Comp Science I learned at a young age( need to brush up for the exam and such), and music theory is kind of a curve ball- but I am interested in the course. If I end up taking Chem, I will have to self study physics C because I already bought a review book.
I have a few questions:
Is this overkill?(I REALLY want to be AP State Scholar of Texas)
What do you guys recommend?
Can I balance school, a part time job, and volunteering along with these courses?
Should I take Physics C or Chem?(I will be a Bio Major)
In terms of cost, I can have my school pay most of the cost so I can get $20 per test( total of either 18 or 17 tests depending on if I take Physics or chem~23 or 22 tests in total over 3 years).
Also, I have all summer to self study so I have that to my advantage too.
It takes a village
My kid got plucked off a train NJ platform at after missing a train due to a late rehearsal in the wee hours by CC mom who lived nearby and just got out of bed to get her tonight. Daughter is crashing on her couch instead of having to wait for a train that would not come through until close to 1 AM.
I'm thinking that's pretty cool. It brings the community that we create here and puts it into something 3D. We should all sign the pledge to do the same. I will. I'm in the Northwest... Seattle to be specific but have car and can travel.
If I knew what the heck a hastage really was mine would say: #feelingateful
Northeastern Fall 2014 Transfers
Hey everyone haven't seen a transfer thread for next fall and I have lots of questions as I'm trying to transfer myself. Hopefully this will get something going and help some people out.
June 14 2014 ACT Discussion
This is for all people to discuss the ACT this Jun 14! I am excited.
A theory that one of my teachers told me is this:
It's kind of better to take the ACT later in the year because most of the very smart students would have already taken it earlier in the year, and so the curve on the last ACT will be more generous. Not exactly sure how valid of a theory is, but I need to take it a second time.
Highly rated movies that disappoint you
All Is Lost - Robert Redford
This one is totally ridiculous.
It's rated 4 stars on EPIX.
Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread
Over at the Parents of the Class of 2013 thread many of us were lamenting our struggles with weight, exercise and health. Since we seem to be a great many in number and we all want and need support and encouragement, let's use this thread to motivate each other towards our goals for 2010 and beyond.
I have struggled with my weight my entire life and struggle to balance weight, exercise and work. I am now an empty-nester and will hopefully have more time to focus on the diet and exercise. My 25th college reunion will be in June and I want to be in shape to run the 5k! I need to lose about 45 pounds as well.
How about the rest of you? What are your goals for 2010?
How do you get student loan forgiveness with the government?
I am going to be graduating next year and I am starting to feel very stressed about my student loans. I owe over 70k. What is the process of getting the student loan forgiveness that the government is offering? Has anyone else looked in to this?
Requesting Dorm Changes?
I was just wondering if it's possible to put in a request for changing dorms before the school year starts. I got my second last choice residence hall (is that common?) and was hoping I could switch if space is available. Kicking myself for not requesting a roommate now... Any input would be great.
Thanks
Chances of getting into UC Berkeley?
I want to major in business, and I figure UC Berkeley would be a great school for me. I figured maybe my EC's would get me into Stanford, but i'm not counting on it.
My cumulative GPA is a 3.7 at a prestigious college prep school just outside of Los Angeles. The first 2 years I didn't do much in school, but I kicked myself into gear, taking 3 AP's junior year and i'm going to take 3 AP's and one honors senior year.
Freshman year:
1st semester: 3.3 GPA, no honors or ap
2nd semester: 3.4 GPA, no honors or ap
Sophomore year:
1st semester 3.9 GPA no honors or ap
2nd semester 3.7 GPA no honors or ap
Junior year:
1st semester 4.1 GPA Honors Latin, AP Biology
2nd semester 4.2 GPA Honors Latin, AP Biology, AP Macroeconomics
SAT score 1850 and 1970.
EC's:
I have both a clothing company and an imprinting company. The imprinting company I've had for 3 years and am doing very well with, 2013 I did $160,000 in sales and $35,000 in profit. The clothing company I just started up.
I run a charity with a friend to help underprivileged kids in the inner city.
Junior class president
I'm going to be ASB President Senior Year
I took a summer course on green business (Like Tesla) at UCLA before my junior year.
I am from a middle class white family in the San Fernando Valley.
My essay is probably going to be about how my two brother's struggles with respective heroin and meth addictions has inspired me to work hard and make something of myself. In particular, it will be about how the weekend before finals sophomore year, I remember being in the emergency room waiting room because my oldest brother "had bugs burrowing into his skin," and thinking to myself that I can't end up like either of them, in their mid 20's still living at home, relying on my parents for everything, and then ending up hallucinating because of a bad batch of meth. So I went home that night, spent the entire weekend studying for finals, kicked up by business into gear, and ran for class president.
Thank you so much!
***June 2014 SAT (US ONLY)***
I'm surprised no one had made this thread before I did.
Anyway, how has your SAT prep come along? This will be my last SAT and because I suck I procrastinated so I began studying 3 weeks prior... Still hoping for 2100+ though
Parent trying to tell me to learn C# instead of Fortran for engineering
I'm a mechanical engineering student (going to be a sophomore this fall). Both programming languages look interesting, and I've already gotten started on Fortran a bit.
One of my parents works as an accountant for an engineering firm and has been trying to convince me that Fortran usage in engineering is dwindling, and that I would be better off learning C#.
I know that Fortran is extensively used in the scientific community and by engineering firms that don't want to reprogram all of their legacy software, though how much is Fortran and C# is used in engineering fields, such as industrial robotics?
Do you color your own hair at home?
I have mid-length medium brown hair, that I have been having professionally colored (weaved) for years now (a medium blond shade - 2 different shades, for low and high lights, mostly to mask the gray). It is a very complementary color to my skin tone, and most people who know me think it suits me nicely. I've been thinking about making the switch to doing my hair myself, and wondered if you all do your own hair color. Do you think I'd be crazy to try to do it myself (mine comes out very natural looking, and I have it done every 6 weeks).
Thoughts? Products you love?
How "well-rounded" is this list?
I'm a rising senior, and I'm unsure about adding a few colleges to my list. I'm afraid I'm adding too many schools that have low acceptance rates, which may not end well in March/April. Here's my list of the schools I'm pretty sure I'll apply to:
Brown
Harvard
Georgetown
Washington University in St. Louis
New York University (both NY and Shanghai campuses)
University of Oklahoma
Kansas University
I'm considering applying to Emory, but I'm worried that will make my list (even more) lop-sided. My parents are encouraging me to apply to Yale and Princeton, but I'm afraid that's too many uber competitive schools. I'm in state for Oklahoma, plus I'm comfortably within the range for National Merit Semifinalst, so I expect to be an NMSF. My ACT is a 33 with writing (11), but I took it again this past Saturday. My unweighted GPA is 3.98. I'm also enrolled as a part time student at a top 100 university in my city. I have a 4.0 at that university, where I have completed 14 credits in the past year, none of which counted for high school credit (I know some colleges are picky about that) or replaced high school courses (I was literally in class from 8 AM to 7 PM three days a week). There are other activities and such, but I don't feel comfortable writing my life story on the internet for strangers, and I know none if you probably want to read another such list. I know it's next to impossible to determine what my "chances" are at the first four (maybe five) of those colleges, but am I even competitive for those schools? These other threads with 2400, straight 800 SAT IIs, and like 6.8 weighted GPAs are making me less sure. Is applying to all four a waste of time because I don't even have a chance? And should I replace them with slightly less competitive schools like Emory, or is it already too lop-sided?
Thanks!
Any suggestions for a nice luggage set? High quality, sturdy etc.
Thank you!
Will I fit in at UGA?
The majority of the honors kids I associate myself with from my high school end up at Georgia Tech or UGA, and seeing as how I am not an engineer type person I'm looking into UGA.
I toured a few colleges last week (Mercer, GSU, and Valdosta). I decided that Mercer was too small for my liking, Valdosta was beautiful but I'm not sure if its as academically competitive as I prefer (average ACT of only 21), and I didn't really like the location of GSU as it was in a small town away from city life.
I think UGA fits what I want as an academic challenge, but I'm worried I won't fit in because I do not drink.party/smoke. I can also be shy as people tell me I'm unapproachable, but I want to make new friends in college and try to be more outgoing. I also know I do want a decent sized school so that's why UGA has become a top choice.
Do you think I will fit in at UGA and is there a good social scene that doesn't party?
And if you have any other suggestions of a good academic, decent sized, city school in the southeast?
(By the way, if it matters I want to major in biology or psychology and then go to grad school for a masters in Occupational Therapy so that's another reason why I prefer a more prestigious, recognizable college)
How much is writting a book considered in State Scholarship/Ivy extracurricular activitiy weight.
Dear college confidential,
I had a wild idea today, which I wanted to run to the form. How impressive would writing a non-fiction research paper like book be to admissions. Book will be around 200-600 pages long, and will be a thesis style book. I'm pressed for time, so I will provide more details tomorrow.
Thank you,
High School Student
