Should I Give Away the Family Dog?

$

CC has helped me wade through the college admissions process with my youngest two children and the last one leaves for college in late August. I recently looked at our adopted dog and as he looked back with his adoring brown eyes, I said, "You will always be pre-verbal and you're never going to college." I am exhausted, over-extended, and broke with two children in college at the same time. I am therefore considering putting him up for adoption. Bear with me while I explain my rationale. Reasons FOR Giving the Up the Family Dog: It is just me, bearing the sole responsibility for dog care. Child support ends this month, representing a significant loss of income. I travel extensively for business and associated boarding expenses run $35-$60 per day. Two kids' college expenses are crazy high. Housing options that charge additional rent and deposits for pets OR do not rent to people with pets. No foreseeable additional income to deal with all of the above. Lessening my stress level with no additional sentient beings in need of a meal, a medical appointment, or a walk. The dog is highly adoptable--sweet, a pure-bred Corgi, does not bark, loves everyone. Reasons for NOT Giving Up the Family Dog: Total guilt-tripping from two of my children: (For example, "How could you give away our dog? It concerns me you don't see the dog as your responsibility since you rescued him in the first place.") London daughter says she will take him but has not yet devised a plan to get him from LAX to LHR. Youngest daughter sees Family Dog as her lifesaver through trying high school years and does not want me to give him to anyone OUTSIDE the family. Dog actually does get me out to exercise. Your two cents is much appreciated.

SMU's Engineering Reputation

Hi I'm an incoming engineering undergraduate to SMU and I wanted to know more about the opportunities given to SMU engineering students once they graduate. Lately, I've been a bit concerned that because SMU is not as highly ranked in engineering as UT, TAMU, or Rice that I would be at huge disadvantage when applying to graduate schools or jobs. Is this a correct assumption? I also wanted to know more about the strength of the biomedical specialization within the electrical and mechanical engineering programs at SMU. I was wondering if SMU offered any research in the biomedical field to its undergraduate students. In general, I also want to know about the extent of the research that goes on in SMU's engineering department. I would love to hear from anyone who has graduated from SMU engineering or knows anyone that has. I just want to know what your experience was like. I chose SMU because I believed it was the best choice for me and unfortunately I will not know if it was until I actually start in the Fall. I just hope that I won't be at a major disadvantage compared to students from other universities as long as I keep my grades up high and be active at SMU. Thanks!

My aunt is a (well-liked) professor at one of the schools I'm planning to apply to. I know legacies can help in admissions, but would something like this help me, even a little, in admissions? Thanks!

How much work do you have? I have 10th Honors Lit (annotating two books, this is the hardest and takes the most time), AP World (also hard but takes less time), AP Compsci (easy and short, I just procrastinate a lot), plus SAT & ACT prep on weekends gg

I got all As in the class, and every essay we wrote was graded on the AP rubric. I got 8s and 7s on all my essays, and usually 30/55 on the MC. What are my chances of getting college credit? Thanks!

Would I fit in

I am from New York and potentially want to to go to Ole Miss, my biggest fear is that the people there will not like me. I am confident I could get into Ole Miss. I want to be a part of greek life where ever I go so, I realize it is a big change culturally where I would be moving. I'm sure I would catch on with some of the cultural and social changes but I know for a fact that there will be some things that seem weird to them because I'm from the North I'd never stop doing (sorry that sentence was really confusing). A lot of people in my family have discouraged from going there because they say I won't fit in, so thats my question. Will I be able to make friends there and join a frat or something or will I be labeled an outsider and looked at differently because I'm from the North?

I just moved to this new town, and I am taking all honors classes. I finished will 5 A's and 3 B's. These is the worst grades I have ever gotten and I am extremely disappointed in myself. I've promised myself not to get another B ever again. My dream is to go to a Ivy league school such, especially Harvard or Princeton. But I'm not sure if I can still get in with such bad freshman grades. I am a First Gen Asian student (specifically Pakistani) I play soccer on the school team I play volleyball My GPA weighted is: 3.87 (planning on getting that up) unweighted:3.62 I am in robotics, debate, FBLA, student council, Key club, Model UN, ect. I am volunteering at my local hospital during the summer and going to JHU CTY I took a practice ACT and I got a 25 with no prep. Is that good for my age? Please help me and tell me what I can do to get into an Ivy league school

My team doesn't get enough credit. They play as a team with strong fundamentals. Gregg Popovich is a genius. No scandals, not covered in tats, no primadonnas. Boring to some, beautiful to me. Can't wait to see how Kawhi develops.

The Official Fall 2014 UCLA Transfer Decisions Thread

Decisions are slated to be released next month in "late April." Although UCLA hasn't committed to an exact date as far as anyone here knows, they have historically released their decision date for transfers about a month after they've released freshman decisions, which was March 21st this year. Historically, they've also released their decisions a couple days or so before UC Berkeley(April 25th, this year), so this means UCLA will probably release transfer decisions around April 20th-23rd. Who else just wants the end of April to come already? I sure do. Good luck to everyone!

What questions should I ask my major academic advisor?

I have an appointment with an academic advisor and was wondering what questions I should ask. My major is public relations and I am not exactly sure what to ask. I get an hour with my academic advisor and want to make the most of it. Please let me know! (: These are the questions I have so far: Where can I get a full list of all the courses I need to graduate? What tutoring services are available? How do I find them? Should I take any classes in the summer to help graduate sooner? What clubs/activities should I join regarding my major? Any on campus internship opportunities I can apply for?

So, I have seen a thread for the class of '15, the members of which aren't even in high school yet. I figured that we needed a thread of our own. If there already is one (I haven't found one) direct me to that. Just post whatever, academics, non-school related things, schedules, that sort of thing. Uhh, I'll post my next year's schedule for y'all to compare yours to, and that sort of thing. AP Euro Honors Algebra II/Trig. Honors English 10 Chemistry Health AP Psych Latin II Debate

Basically, my parents' income does not qualify me for any sort of need-based aid, so I'm depending on potential merit based scholarships from private schools I will be applying to. I'd really appreciate it if you could chance me for the possibility of receiving major merit scholarships (i.e. full tuition) from USC, LMU, Pepperdine, Pitzer, and Scripps. For those who are in a prestigious college, how did you manage in high school?

Hi, for starters I am now becoming a junior and with SAT tutor and bunch of other extracurricular I have to do in summer, I am feeling quite overwhelmed. I have to go to Elite(SAT Tutor) every morning and finish the homework they assign, practice basketball, work out in the gym, practice guitar, study for FBLA, and serve community service every Saturday. As you can see, I have a lot of tasks to do in such a short amount of time. I know this is all possible to do, but it is absolutely tiring to do this everyday. I know many of you who are successful in college had done this in your high school life, but how? What are some tips I can receive to make this work load easier? How did your schedule look like? And lastly, why did you choose to be in major you're in right now?

Should I transfer? AP vs IB

My school offers 10 AP courses. I can only take five, however (It's AP Design, AP Studio Art, AP Microeconomics, AP Computer Sciences, AP French, AP Chem, AP Phys, AP Eng Lit, AP Eng Lang, AP Calculus. I won't take Design, Studio art, Microeconomics, Comp. Sci, or french, leaving me with only the remaining five to take). My top school is Yale or Johns Hopkins. Will this be enough AP courses if I get all 5's on them? I might take AP bio separately with a tutor or something. The IB school I want to go to, however, gives me these as options: IB Calc, IB History, IB Phys, IB Bio, IB Chem, IB Japanese, IB English, Orchestra 12. These are all the courses I've wanted to take since I entered high school. So what's stopping me? First off, I have leadership positions in my current AP school. I'm Grade 11 Rep, Founder and President of the Orchestra Club, and President of our MUN club. Some people say I don't need leadership positions/extra circulars for Johns Hopkins, but does this apply to Yale as well? In the IB school, I'll lose all of my leadership positions. But are these three positions even worth staying for? Or should I just throw all of that out, go to the IB school where all of my desired courses are, and start studying again there? Does Yale even care about leadership positions? I'm so confused. I want to know what is the best for me, since I'm an international student and all of that (Canadian). Thanks.

This is my schedule for next year (sophomore): AP Gov. & Pol. Algebra 2 H Geometry H Latin 2 H Chemistry H English H Theatre The problem is that if I wanted to I could take a second AP class instead of Theatre, but I really enjoy theatre. But, since I would like to go to an Ivy League I think that I should take the most rigorous courses possible. Would it hurt my chances of admission if I denied taking a second AP?

NYC lawmakers propose change to Specialized High School Admissions http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/725125-lawmakers-propose-change-to-specialized-high-school-admissions/ The bill would modify the admission criteria for specialized schools by giving weight to factors like attendance and GPA. Currently, an applicant’s score on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the sole determinant of admission to those schools.Eight specialized high schools in the city currently use the SHSAT, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. ...The legislation aims to make the demographics at the elite specialized schools more representative of the city’s diverse groups.
